Even with a name like Autumn Doodle Cowl, I’d argue there’s no wrong time to knit one — like in April, for example.
The Autumn Doodle Cowl is a modular pattern designed by Jamie Lomax of PNW Designs, with an array of autumnal motifs and the creative freedom to mix and match, thus creating a truly unique cowl every time.
In choosing yarns for my cowl, I wanted a mix of earthy tones with a pop of colour. I chose tonal DKs from Estelle, and a stunning variegated yarn by indie dyer Essence of Autumn, which was too serendipitous a name to pass up.
When planning my cowl’s layout, I relied on my graphic design skills to realize my creative vision. I took screenshots of Jamie’s premade designs, picked out my favourites, and laid them out in Photoshop as though the canvas was my cowl. I wanted a reversible project, so the cowl would have the elaborate fair isle colourwork on one side, and a minimalist design when worn inside out. Workshopping the pattern digitally helped me figure out the best way to achieve my desired effect.
I worked in the round, with half of my stitches dedicated to fair isle work and the other to a staggered pattern of dots, so that when it was done, I would sew the two ends of the resulting tube together, hiding the excess strands and floats within unseen. Whether I wanted the dots or the fair isle on display, all I had to do was flip.
Stranded colorwork and following a chart are still things I struggle with. I find it’s easy to get lost and make mistakes, and while I did make some mistakes in my cowl, I still think it’s super cute.
Now that fall has arrived, I’m looking forward to sporting this cowl whenever I leave the house!
